About me

I am an experienced UK-based editor, an Advanced Professional Member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP) and a member of the Society of Authors. Several of my non-fiction books have been published and I continue to write, but most of my working week is spent editing.

After twelve years on the otherwise uninhabited island of Islandmore on Strangford Lough, Northern Ireland, my wife and I moved to Scotland in 2014, where we are renovating a cottage beside Loch Awe, in Argyll. We return to the island as often as we can.

Lynn is a professional artist and a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour (RSW), painting as Lynn McGregor.

For more information on my books and on island life, see The Blue Cabin.

Specialties

Literary and commercial fiction: developmental editing, line editing and proofreading for independent/self-publishing novelists and for mainstream publishers.

Non-fiction: copyediting of general non-fiction for publishers.

Law: copyediting of law and business texts for specialist publishers.

Why hire an editor?

It’s easy to become so familiar with your own writing that you become blind to the areas that can make or break a manuscript:

• the fine detail spelling, punctuation, grammar, syntax;

• bigger issues use of language, consistency, voice, style, rhythm and flow; and

• the big picture  the wider structure of your manuscript.

A good editor can help with all of these and much more. That said, he or she should be mindful of the brief, attuned to your authorial voice and ready to listen in short, your editor should not forget that it’s your book!

How it works

For independent novelists, the first step is to email me with a little background, including genre, word count and your ideal time frame. I will get back to you with my availability and will often ask for a short sample to edit (free of charge). Based on the sample edit we can decide between us:

• whether I am a good fit as your editor;

• the level of intervention with which you are comfortable;

• the likely timing; and

• the cost.

Occasionally, I have to turn work away, but if that happens I’ll be happy to help you find an experienced and qualified editor who has availability.
